So when and where were you born? I was born in 1930 in Jacksonville, Florida. Okay. And what did your parents do for a living? My father was in a bookstore. So magazines beyond your mom. My mom was a housewife. Housewife. Okay, Um, did you grow up in Jacksonville?

Uh, played football in our school was so small. I went to a school called Saint Joseph's Academy, and it's not there anymore. It's just a vacant field and way had to combine three schools to make, uh, enough players for football team and huh? One played football.

And then when I finished high school, I went thio Florida State for first semester, and I hurt my back in January. I went in service. Were in Korean order, uh, 40 Korean. Okay, so what year did you graduate? High school? 49 1949. Okay. And then january of 1950.

And at that time, they had what they call flaw that villages on. They still have the one we lived in. We moved in one where it is now that but they were all wouldn't build a two story wooden buildings. Okay, So how did you end up in the Panama Canal? How did you end up in the Panama Canal? Uh, that's a strange story. When when I was there in 64 to get you know, that summer the e went to the summer had to go to summer session a room with the assistant superintendent of schools from Panama.

Way were in athletic Norm, There's Murphy. Was that time and we would weigh had classes together and everything. And he says he told another friend of mine from Jacksonville and myself We ever wanted to come in the Panama Canal. He could probably get a job, you know, teaching eso in 67.

Wait e don't have a job for you yet. And then he called me back later on, and he says we're opening an elementary school on, and we're gonna have a job. Uh, city park director, you know, are working in a handling administrative affairs of park and all, you know, keeping kids in line and various activity. That's more or less what a record system. Waas. So that was the first elementary p e teacher. And but it wasn't for, like, six months.

And plus, I had to coach football and, uh, other sports that year Coach track also help. I was assistant coach at the high school in high school. Which high school? Malvo. Bob. Oh, okay. And, uh, from there, uh, you wanna hear? Interested? Yes. Canal e everything.

Yeah, well, uh, my father was having problems, so we had what was called. It was a two year deal. Uh, you had to sign up for two years, and then you could go back. You know, they would pay transportation for down and back and whatnot. You know, if you served in two years, So I had to leave for one year.

But in the meantime, I've got married down there. Thio. Panamanian lady? Yeah. No, we came back Jacksonville and I got a job is a, uh, elementary, p e teacher with three schools and three elementary schools on the north side of town and street. One of them up most most a memorable experiences in ways playing softball one day and a little kid, uh, catching.

That was at that time. It was kind of like, uh, uh, sort of a farming business district. And near the airport, it was like one size garden city. Garden City was one of my schools in garden city was strictly wrong on, uh, but now it's, you know, they got a walmart and all that kind of stuff.

Uh, then when I went back to Panama after after one year, my father got okay, but of course, they died later on, but, uh, I went back and, uh, stayed down there until 1982. Uh, in the meantime, I was Well, I was down there. I went with various jobs, uh, went to junior high for six months, and then I then I came back bellboy high school different, um, as what you would call an athletic director.

I was head of the physical education in the high school with, and I had to two men besides myself and three women who coaching, you know, in physical education, teaching classes, Most of them, most of us coach some sport or something way had regular program with a very good program, physical education and, uh, good teachers.

You know, it was kind of a a me Google situation. It was really good on, uh, of course, with a bacchanal with tolls and everything, you couldn't get just about everything you need. Way had kids in physical education We had a locker room with showers. So And we had a basket room where the kids had their shorts.

And, uh, girls had gym suits. Way had attendants that put him out to the kids. We didn't have to do that as teachers, like you would hear. You have to do everything. You know, Uh, so, you know, things like that. It was really good. And it was a good situation.

Had a good athletic program on and off course through the years, it increased way. Had one year, we had to switch and way divided up. Like my school with Val Way had switched. The two football teams way went to and then Chris Topol only had one.

So we had a pretty good three way competition there. It was, you know, really good situation. Everything was good in the Panama Canal. Okay, except for the riots What can you tell me about the riots? I wasn't there. That was in 64. Okay, I came right after after that.

Did people still talk about it when you came? Oh, yeah. Well, not so much talk about it. It was just, uh, different situations. Like high school was was an important place in during the rights. That's what they want to get. They had a like a It's like, like, right now with the, uh uh What is it with Congress?

They made a law that you can, uh, you can't have a pipeline. Schools on people have the 10 commandments out in front of the church or whatever things. And they say you can't do that. Well, we had a statue of a little head, actually of al boy, And that was probably the center of the whole of the whole school.

Well, over the whole riots, probably. You know, it's more than just, uh, Panamanians one in the country back or something like that. You know what I mean? It was different, you know, Way had a canal right through the middle of the country, but everybody I knew down there Panamanians and yeah, Americans of like, you know, way got along really well.

Everything was beautiful situation. And that's my last year. I'm where I had Dio. We went with the Department of Defense Way had three changes to changes. Was there one? When I started out, I worked for Panama Canal Company and the company was one of the two parts of the U.

S. Government that paid money back into the the government. The government? Yeah, it was us in the post office, Believe it or not. Now the post office is training more money than way were one of the two that was given money back Thio to the U.

S. And so that was part of like I told you, they take toes off the ships on. It's quite a bit of money on uh so we had about whatever we wanted down there. But during my, uh, time down there, we changed Thio Panama Canal Commission, which was it's the same thing.

But before we had a governor now we didn't have a governor. We had an administrator, and, uh, you know, Joe would Yeah, course, Joe would was the administrators, which is the equivalent of being a governor just like the governor of Florida. Hey was the administrator. And third.

Third thing is now that they changed the canal, they've given it back, depending on Jimmy Carter. Uh, sold us out. You know how many like I said, way with only one then giving money back to the government S o. He would rather spend money. They give it back.

Of course, we had little communities across the canal, but it was great. So I think it's a great situation. We had all kinds of hot new fishing and jungle orchids, books, scorpions under boards or whatever. Uh, and we didn't have our own, you know, private houses.

It was a very good competition. Okay, so what was it like coaching the football team? A Balboa, just like anywhere else. Kids kids wouldn't do what you told them. Thio.
