Uh, he from Montana. Uh, he sent an application without ever expecting Teoh. Get the job. Hey, went there with the intention of helping to build the third set of locks, which then got off stopped because World War Two came along. And they are now on this day working on those locks.

Yeah. Wow. So he was able to get a job there working on the canal itself? Yes. And he expected it to be just a temporary thing, and it sort of was for him. He was there just a few years. But my mother and sister and I followed him, stayed with him there, and then I met a man who had lived in the canal zone since he was two years old and married him on.

Then I stayed there for 39 years. Well, I raised three daughters there and found Well, actually, let me back up. Um, I didn't do much other than just mothering until my Children were grown. And then I began to kind of branch out, look around and have my own adventures about how old were you when you went there with your father?

I turned 16, just a month after I got there. Okay. So you were able to attend high school there? Yes. And I came from. I came from a little tiny town in Montana called Alberton, where my graduating class would have been 60 my goodness. So I was making that transition. Like I mean, you were just 16 e Montana. And the difference between that and Panama on going to this huge what was that like? That was total culture shock, but, uh, in order to get there, we traveled. My mother's sister and I traveled by train from Montana to New York City.

Okay, Got on a ship and spent. I think it was probably 10 days getting to the, uh, to crystal ball then. And of course, I was seasick for the first three or four days. But when the ship docked and we picked up our luggage, which, by the way, I still have one of the suitcases that we used.

And what was life like adjusting to a much larger high school? A different town? What kind of stuff did you guys do as kids? Um, yes, actually. Wasn't too hard in school. I'd always been a good student. And, um, sorry. Things were pretty well regulated. Right?

But well, actually, life, it wasn't too bad. Too much change for me in that. Diablo Heights was a new town being constructed. Bye. You know, people and populated by new people. So I wasn't the only new person in town, and we teenagers tended to get together.

Can you describe maybe a typical weekend night for a teenager in the zone? Wow. Still, I can't. Partly because my teenage weekends were different and partly because times changed over over the years. So the they're just isn't any any one thing that you can pick up for that.

Right. Um, how did times change? You mentioned you. You're out there in 1940. Was it? So? I mean, that's right on the eve of the war. So? Well, first, a town that I lived in, uh, the buildings were upon stilts with what we call the basement, but was actually, uh, just, uh, a space underneath the house where you can park your car.

Um, we had electric lights, but we didn't have washing machines or dryers or that sort of thing, because the I've forgotten the true now, uh, the cycle of I'm not quite sure how toe how to phrase it between positive and negative. Uh, they were separated and there was a drain. Then going to a pan down in the bottom, which you had to empty, it would overflow. Mhm. Um, what else was different? Did people, um I mean, just been that kind of war atmosphere. Did you notice changes and where people connect?

Okay, now you've reminded me way lived in upstairs apartment, and these buildings didn't have windows. They had screen all the way around the building. We lived in a corner apartment, so there was a screen on 22 sides of our apartment. Uh, the front part was the living room.

Then there was a sort of a half wall which allowed, of course, air to circulate across the upper part of the rules. And beyond that wall with the bedroom and then the kitchen, there was no dining room. There was a kitchen. Um, the apartment next next door was so close that in the mornings when my father was shaving, he could hold a conversation with the man next door who was also shaving because our bathrooms were back to back on Ben during during the war where people nervous did where people kind of on edge because, you know, that area was kind of a strategic.

S. Government. If you got in trouble, you got sent back to the States of your family with you. Um, Panama pretty much took care of its own citizens. Um, there was no riel border between the two countries. You drive down the street on one side. Is one side more kind of populated? I would say the Pacific side was probably more populated, but you know, ast faras the oceans air concerned. In fact, she she married this one, uh, was an Israeli, And he was doing a study on sea snakes in with the idea that if a sea level canal were built and sea snakes migrated from the Pacific to the Atlantic where they didn't exist, uh, they might decimate the fish population because those fish would have not only no immunity, but no knowledge.

And he had a number of little tubs that he had different fission, and he put sea snakes in. His theory was correct in that the Atlantic side fish to safety and that bitten and killed by the sea snakes. Whereas the Pacific side fish, I managed to avoid them.

And they corresponded for years. That's amazing. That's that's a really sweet story. Um, And what about did you guys participate in the Christmas tree bonfire? Oh, yeah, yeah. Everybody. All teenagers would collect Christmas trees. And I remember one group stored their Christmas trees on top of one of the flat roofs, one of the houses.

And it was kind of a tradition amongst the teenagers. Thio seal each other's trees whenever they got a chance, but they all ended up in the same place at the same bonfire. So how was the purpose? When did you eventually leave? The year that Panama took over. Okay. What were your thoughts on that? I was upset. I was against it. Uh, I thought that Oh, me canal zone should be given to Panama, but not that way. They were there year after year, mainly to incite unrest. And this one year, they decided that they were going to have a demonstration. So they brought a big Panama flagged with them. Mhm. And as they were soon after, they crossed the border and got close to Balboa High School.

Um, the, uh I have a kind of a vague memory of one of the soldiers coming to our house, which was not far away, and sure. Hello. I don't remember now why, but I only remember that he had a car.
